Why choose a polymer tank?

Historically, rainwater tanks have been manufactured from a variety of materials including concrete, fibreglass and steel. However, the roto-moulded polyethylene tank has proved the superior performer by far.

When manufactured to a high standard of quality, polymer tanks are considered the cleanest, most robust and durable of all rainwater tanks. They promote pure drinking water, with no toxic effects or taste tainting; algae or mould cannot grow in them; they cannot rust and they look good with a wide range of available colours.

If a polymer tank is unsuitable for your situation, Urban Tanks can help with steel or concrete options that also carry our assurance of quality.

What is “potable” water?

"Potable" water is water that is fit for human consumption, but is not necessarily good water.

"Primary water" is potable water that is used for drinking, showers, kitchen use, washing clothes and so on.

"Secondary water" is water that is used to water the garden or pot plants, washing the car, flushing toilets, etc. Waste primary water can be used as secondary water, with treatment where necessary.

Do I need any filters for my tank?

The household tank is a clean, effective means of harvesting rainwater and the experts at Urban Tanks will advise you on your specific filtration requirements, depending on how you intend to use your tank water.

Whilst the cleanest water of all is rainwater, your tank can still become contaminated by dirt, animals or nearby trees. An excellent solution is to use a water diverter, which stops the first flush of rain and dust from entering the tank while the ball float seals off the dirty water.

Urban Tanks also have design features that keep vermin out of your water supply. In addition, it helps to keep your gutters clean and clear of leaves that may taint the water being collected. If trees are a problem, there is a variety of leaf catchers and gutter mesh covers available on the market.

Most solid material from gutters and downpipes will be caught by the tank strainer and this must be cleaned from time to time.

What are suitable roofing materials for rainwater collection?

Some types of roofing materials or roof paints may contaminate the rainwater you are harvesting. The most suitable types of roofing materials are:

Urban Tanks will advise you if you have any other type of roofing material.

Newly painted roofs must use a special paint suitable for the collection of rainwater. This paint does not contain anti-mould agents. Older paints may be acceptable, but if in doubt, please seek advice from Urban Tanks.

What about Council rebates?

Homeowners installing rainwater tanks may be eligible for a Council rebate on certain sized tanks. Ask Urban Tanks if this applies in your area and to your chosen tank.
